MBBS in Georgia Duration: What Students Study in Each Year of the 6-Year Course
Every page says the MBBS in Georgia duration is six years. Very few explain what happens inside those years, and that is what decides how ready you are for hospital work, and for India’s licensing exam, at the end. Here is the year-by-year picture, built from the published programme documents of Georgian medical universities.
You will learn what each year covers, when hospital training begins and what to verify before you pay any deposit.

What Is the MBBS in Georgia Duration, and How Is It Structured?
The MBBS in Georgia duration is six academic years, or 12 semesters. Georgian universities award the degree as an MD (Doctor of Medicine) under a 360-credit ECTS programme, with 30 credits per semester. The MBBS in Georgia course structure moves from basic sciences to hospital-based training, and the final year is spent in clinical practice. Details differ from one university to another, so read the programme document of the university you shortlist. For Indian students, the NMC’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 add their own test: a course of at least 54 months, taught in English, plus a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution.
How Do ECTS Credits Shape the 6-Year Course?
Credits set your workload. Georgian American University counts one ECTS credit as 30 hours of study, while Geomedi counts 25. Two six-year programmes can look identical on paper and still differ in contact time.
- 60 credits per academic year, split into two semesters
- 360 credits in total across all 12 semesters
- Hours per credit differ between universities
- Mandatory and elective credits vary by programme
Ask for the credit breakdown early. It tells you more than the brochure does.
What Do Students Study in Years 1 and 2 of MBBS in Georgia?
Years 1 and 2 build the foundation: how the human body is built and how it works. At Georgian American University, this phase is called “From Cell to Body” and covers body structure, genes, cells and tissues. Teaching blends lectures with simulation labs, virtual dissection and problem-based learning in second year. Communication and patient-interview skills also start early, so students do not meet clinical work cold in year 4.
What Does Early Learning Look Like?
Expect a mix of theory and guided practice rather than lectures alone.
- Human body structure, taught with virtual dissection
- Gene, cell and tissue biology
- Patient interviewing practised in simulation labs
- Problem-based learning sessions through second year
- Medical ethics and communication skills from the start
What Changes in Year 3 of the MBBS in Georgia Curriculum?
Year 3 is the bridge between theory and the ward. The MBBS in Georgia curriculum now turns to introductory clinical medicine, physical diagnosis, basic pathology and pharmacology. Georgian American University calls this phase “Mechanisms of Health and Disease.” Students learn to read symptoms and signs and to reason through cases before full-time hospital rotations begin. Grigol Robakidze University lists a dedicated transition block in semester VI for the same purpose.
When Do Clinical Rotations Begin in the MBBS in Georgia 6 Year Course?
In most programmes we reviewed, rotations begin in year 4. Georgian American University places them in years 4 and 5. Geomedi and Grigol Robakidze University list rotation cycles from semester VII to XII, which also means year 4 onward. Subjects include internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medicine, paediatrics, psychiatry, radiology and ENT. At Georgian American University, each clerkship ends with a practical clinical exam (OSCE).
| Stage | Years | Main focus | Ask the university |
| Foundation | 1–2 | Body structure, cells, early clinical skills | How much simulation and dissection is included? |
| Bridge | 3 | Pathology, pharmacology, physical diagnosis | When does hospital contact start? |
| Clinical | 4–5 | Rotations across major specialties | Which hospitals, and how large are the groups? |
| Preparation | 6 | Clinical attachments, final assessment | How does the final year meet NMC’s internship rule? |
What Happens in Year 6, and Does It Count as the Internship?
Year 6 prepares graduates for practice. Students rotate through inpatient and outpatient settings and sit a final practical exam; Georgian American University also revisits clinical pharmacology and medical genetics here. Whether this year satisfies the NMC’s 12-month internship requirement depends on how your university structures and documents it, so ask for that in writing. Under Georgian law, a one-cycle MD graduate works as a junior doctor under supervision.
Returning to India adds more steps. Graduates must pass the FMGE and complete a supervised internship in India. In the June 2026 session, the overall FMGE pass rate was 12.78%, while first-time candidates passed at over 35%, and about 88% of candidates were repeaters, according to figures the Health Ministry gave Parliament. Those numbers make one point plain: the six years themselves are your preparation.
How Do You Compare Georgian Universities Before You Apply?
Compare programme documents, not promotional pages. Check when rotations start, which hospitals host them, whether teaching is fully in English, and how the final year fits the FMGL rules. One 2026 change also matters. Georgia’s Education Minister announced in December 2025 that state universities would stop admitting new foreign students from 2026–27, except in exceptional cases. Private universities continue to admit international students, so confirm each university’s current intake directly before applying.
Private options to compare include East European University, Caucasus International University, David Tvildiani Medical University and the universities above. Wisera states that it explains fees, admission steps and university details upfront, and its step-by-step MBBS admission guide shows what to expect once you shortlist.
FAQs
How many years is MBBS in Georgia?
Six academic years (12 semesters), awarded as an MD under a 360-credit ECTS programme. Individual universities set their own curriculum within that framework.
Is the internship included in the 6 years?
It depends on the university. Many programmes place clinical attachments in year 6, but NMC requires a 12-month internship at the same institution. Ask each university to confirm in writing how it meets that rule.
When do clinical rotations start?
Usually in year 4. Georgian American University runs rotations in years 4 and 5, and Geomedi lists rotations from semester VII, which is the start of year 4.
Is an MD from Georgia valid in India?
It is valid for practice only after meeting NMC's FMGL conditions, passing the FMGE and completing India's supervised internship. Check the university's compliance before admission.
Do all Georgian universities follow the same curriculum?
No. The six-year, 360-credit framework is common, but modules, hospital partners, credit hours and the final-year structure differ.
Can Indian students still join state universities in Georgia for 2026–27?
State universities announced they would stop new international admissions from 2026–27, except in exceptional cases. Private universities remain open. Confirm current status with each university.
Choose Your Six Years With the Full Picture
The MBBS in Georgia duration is six years, but the value sits in how those years are built: foundation sciences first, a bridge year, hospital rotations from year 4, and a final year that prepares you for practice and the rules back home. Compare programmes on that structure, not on the number alone.
